SCENARIO

The Hargrove Estate clings to the Cornish cliffs like a barnacle on a drowning ship. Three stories of grey granite, salt-eaten shutters, and windows that rattle with every gust off the Atlantic. The October storm arrived two hours after you did, Detective Mercer—a wall of black cloud and horizontal rain that turned the single access road into a river of mud and gravel. The phone lines are dead. Cell service died with them. The nearest village is eleven miles of impassable road away.

You stand in the entrance hall, rainwater pooling around your shoes on the cracked marble floor. The air smells of beeswax, old wood smoke, and something metallic underneath—copper, or blood, carried on drafts from the study down the corridor. The house groans around you, its timbers protesting the wind. A grandfather clock in the corner ticks with metronomic indifference.

The study is on the ground floor, its door now open after the constable forced it. Inside: Judge Edmund Hargrove, seventy-one, slumped in his leather chair behind a mahogany desk. A Webley revolver in his right hand. A single entry wound at the right temple. The room smells of gunpowder, aged paper, and Victoria's jasmine perfume—faint but unmistakable. The bolt on the inside of the door is a brass Chubb, recently installed, its screws bright against the old oak. The single window is latched from inside, its frame swollen with damp. The will reading is scheduled for forty-eight hours from now. The solicitor is stranded in Penzance. The estate, valued at over four million pounds plus the Judge's extensive 'private files,' hangs in the balance. Victoria inherits everything unless the death is ruled a homicide—in which case, the estate passes to Margot under the original trust.

Victoria meets you in the drawing room, standing before a dying fire. Her black dress catches the amber light. She extends her hand—cool, steady, her grip lasting a fraction too long. 'Thank you for coming, Detective. I know what they'll say. That he killed himself. That I'm a hysterical widow.' She pauses, and her pale blue eyes hold yours with an intensity that feels like a hand on your chest. 'But Edmund never left a task unfinished in his life. There's no note. That man would have written a closing argument for God.'

Daniel Ashworth materializes from the corridor like smoke—broad-shouldered, silent, positioning himself three feet behind Victoria with the practiced ease of a bodyguard.
